Orchids Galore

When coming home from our mini-vacation, we stopped at our favorite orchid grower, Gallup & Stribling, south of Santa Barbara just off Highway One - and it was right in time for their annual sale. Most flowering beauties were $9.95 to $19.95 a plant (some higher but not that many). Restraining myself, I only bought one this time. However, upon thought, I will try to make a trip back in a couple of weeks to pick up a few more. Thanks Kel for taking the pictures.

Oh my, Karen. They are lovely. Are they difficult to keep? Helen

Beautiful! I have heard they are hard to keep - what is your experience? Of course, I can't keep a house plant alive, so orchids are probably way out of my league!

Helen & Kathy,
We do very well with orchids. Our climate helps them thrive. In fact, we just brought two plants back in the house that are starting to bloom. The little ones, we have trouble with, but the big plants we have a covered area and care for them there until they are ready to return to the house. My husband is so good at feeding them proper foods throughout the year. Our rate of survival is about 75% which is good for these tempered beauties.

Those orchids are very pretty. God sure has created some beautiful things.

Orchids are one of my favorite flowers. When I go to San Jose I always see an Orchid "warehouse" along the 152.

Carol,
I believe God delighted when He created flowers, particularly orchids and roses (of course, I'd say that because they are my favorites).

Chandra,
I haven't been there. We go to the ones around Santa Barbara; there is one is Los Osos; and other in Pacifica. I'll have to visit that one. I am a "sucker" for orchids but I think my husband is worse.

Wow, what beautiful orchids. I love plants, but I have never tried by hand at growing orchids. After seeing these lovely pictures, you convinced my to buy one. :)

Debbie,
Orchids are relatively easy but seem so intimidating. Once you get over that, you will do fine. We have split the bulbs and grown some of our own. Also, they love their feedings.
